What does an NCD Coach do?
An NCD Coach is someone from outside the church who helps a leader gain the most from the NCD process.
Their chief role is to keep you focused on the key health issues that arise in successive NCD Surveys.
This may involve:
- working with you on your latest Survey results to identify the health issues.
- assisting you to plan a course of action.
- holding you accountable and ensuring you stay focused on the issues.
- discussing your understanding of the various parts of the NCD paradigm.
The NCD Coach does not lead the NCD process in your church. That is your responsibility.
What are the signs that you may need a coach?
A coach can be useful if:
- you are losing momentum on the longer term health issues raised in your NCD Survey because of the day-to-day demands of ministry.
- you and your team are having difficulties gaining clarity on your results.
- you need a facilitator.
- you have ideas you need to test on someone outside the church.
How do coaches work?
Every coach comes with a different range of skills and experience. It is up to you to discuss what they offer and their availability.
It may be attending a meeting to address a specific task. Or having a regular “get together” face-to-face or by phone. It may be contact
on an “as needed” basis.
The critical issue is finding the person with the right experience who will keep you focused
on the key health issues that arise in successive NCD Surveys.
Questions to put to a potential coach
- What NCD training have you done? When was that?
- Do you have any preferences for the way you coach?
- Who are you coaching currently? Would you mind if I spoke to them?
- How much do you charge for your services?
Are coaches essential?
No. Do not underestimate your capacity to see the issues in your Survey results and know what is needed. After all, you and the
people in your church know it better than anyone else. It may be just as beneficial to talk to another leader going through the NCD process, someone at the same stage or who has been where you are now.
How do you find a coach?
Some denominations have NCD Coaches trained to help you. Call your denominational headquarters and ask. Alternatively you may explore the list on this website. Most people listed have completed NCD training and have expressed a desire to coach church leaders.
